Reflections of the Life of Willie Barnes

Willie Barnes, 87, peacefully passed away at Wellstar Kennestone Hospital on January 29, 2024.

He was born in Belle Alliance, Louisiana on August 6, 1936, son of the late Willie Barnes, Sr., and Albertha Alexander (Landry). He was predeceased by his loving wife of 44 years, Jennie; son, Gary; George Alexander Sr. (Stepfather); brothers Henry, Chester, and George Jr.; and grandson Mosi (Arthur). He is survived by his children Arthur (Shirley); Timothy (Heidi); Gala (Sandee), and daughter-in-law Joyce (Gary); his grandchildren Allegra, Jamar, Jariel, Anthony, Marcus, Jacoby, Precious, Trinity, Zion, Kendall, Madison; and numerous great grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings William, Ernest (EJ), Arthur, Thelma, Joseph, Mertis, Mary, Corlis, and Myra, and a host of nieces and nephews, extended family, and close friends.

Willie grew up down the bayou in the town of Donaldsonville, where he always fondly recalled playing cowboys, going to see the latest John Wayne movie, and going to church. With the small dimples appearing, he once described the bond with his brothers as '"if someone messed with one of us, we would all fight!" Also, he appreciated all his younger sisters respecting him and sometimes listening to him! He was immensely proud of being a graduate of Lowery High School, where he was in the high school's first school band as a second trombone player. Upon graduation, Willie became a trusted carpenter's apprentice to a World War II veteran, building church pews. At his suggestion, initially Willie considered joining the Navy, but after overhearing what ship life was like, took a detour and enlisted in the Army!

Willie was a Korean War veteran, who proudly served his country for 26 years, completing tours in Georgia, Louisiana, New Jersey, and Germany. Those tours were not only filled with the responsibility of making sure troops were safely deployed, but also filled with providing his wife and kids the opportunity to learn new cultures, customs, and always find a church community. After retiring to Louisiana as a Sergeant First Class, Willie was not about to rest for too long! He spent several years as a facilities manager at Tulane University and then took one final tour with Jennie to Georgia to rest awhile.

Aside from his military career, his other pride and joy were his wife and four children. His ability to seamlessly transition from tea party host, boy scout leader, to driving instructor was masterful. The example he set as a man of faith, love, kindness, and humor will be forever inspiring.
