Mrs. Wilhelmina Garvey Obituary

Wilhelmina Garvey, of Kennesaw, Georgia, USA, born July 4, 1924, lived a full and dignified life prior to transitioning on May 8, 2022.  She was a discerning woman of impeccable character, who provided comfort and solace while asking very little in return. Her formative years were spent in Rose Hill, St. Mary Jamaica, where after obtaining her primary education, she developed and showcased her creative skills by sewing clothing and other home furnishings by hand.

Her family adored her as through her daily interactions she modelled integrity, loyalty and compassion, imbuing them with the confidence and emotional intelligence necessary to pursue life with a pervasive, contagious fervor.  Nothing brought her more joy than knowing her family was happy and comfortable.

Mamzel, as she was affectionately called, enjoyed watching cricket. She was an avid believer in Christ and loved to quote the Bible and had a strong faith in God.  Additionally, she enjoyed conversations surrounding politics; she declared the Rt. Honorable Michael Manley as her ultimate political mentor and proclaimed him one of her national heroes.  She had an amazing sense of humor. Her wit was razor sharp and she was known to say the most shocking thing she could think of, in hopes of helping you see things from a new perspective.

Wilhelmina, from an early age, found pleasure in tilling the soil.  Among the fruits of her labor were sweet potatoes, gungo peas, sugar cane, yam and cassava.  As a mother in her community, she had a gift of making everyone feel like family.  She constantly made it a point of duty to check in on people, prepared meals and was always a source of positivity.

We have lost a special family member, one who was a hardworking, loving mother, grandmother, loyal, unselfish friend and someone who commanded the respect and admiration of all with whom she interacted. She now joins children Wilfred, Veronica and Verna who predeceased her. Her surviving children Vincent, Alfonso, Viola, Deleta, Cleveland and Hope, other family members and well-wishers take comfort in knowing that she is now at peace surrounded by light.
